Course Overview

Many aspiring character artists struggle to move beyond stiff, lifeless figures. They study anatomy in isolation but can't translate that knowledge into dynamic, believable characters. In this course, Faraz Shanyar teaches you to think about characters as living forms, connecting anatomy, movement, and silhouette into a unified design process.

This is a comprehensive character design course built on strong fundamentals. You will start with the basics of lines and shapes, progress through anatomy and gesture drawing, and build up to fully rendered character illustrations. It's not about copying references, it's about understanding the body and making deliberate design choices.

The curriculum is structured around progressive skill-building. Each week layers new knowledge onto the last, moving from skeleton studies and gesture drawing to silhouette design, clothing, color, and final presentation. By the end, you will have a complete character piece ready for your portfolio.

Key Takeaways:

  • Anatomy as Design Language: Learn to use anatomical knowledge not just for accuracy, but as a tool for creating expressive, dynamic characters with clear intent.

  • Silhouette & Shape Language: Understand how to design characters that read instantly, using strong silhouettes and deliberate shape choices to communicate personality.

  • From Sketch to Final: Master a complete workflow from initial gesture sketches through blocking, detailing, coloring, and final illustration with background.

MENTOR WORK

words from Faraz Shanyar

My goal with this class is to share the approach I use every day in professional production. Character design is not just about drawing pretty figures; it is about understanding how the body works, how it moves, and how to use that knowledge to tell a story through your designs.

We will start from the very foundations: lines, shapes, and skeletal structure. From there, I will guide you through gesture, movement, silhouette, and all the way to a finished character illustration. By the end, you will not just know how to draw characters, you will understand why certain design decisions work and how to apply that thinking to any project.
